When Bob and I talked about where we would like to visit we both agreed that Scandinavia sounded like a good place to go. I’ve always wanted to see The Little Mermaid statue in Copenhagen and we both wanted to see Norway. After talking over traveling north in Norway for a chance at seeing the Aurora Borealis we realized that would take too much time, so we settled on seeing a little bit of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

We started our vacation in Copenhagen and really enjoyed walking through the old town and looking at the boats and beautiful homes that lined the canals.

Of course we went to the The Little Mermaid. I thought she was just as pretty as the pictures I saw in books when I was a little girl, but Bob thought she was disappointing. Was he hoping to see a real mermaid?? It is a rather small statue, but so pretty!

We wandered around old town Copenhagen and I noticed this cool dragon street lamp. I made Bob take my picture with Hans Christian Anderson, and our boat tour guide pointed out these two kiosks along the harbor. They belong to the Royal Family. When they wait for their yacht to pick them up they wait in here!

Not too far from the harbor we found this Church of our Savior with its beautiful spiral staircase winding counterclockwise outside the steeple.

I just couldn’t stop taking pictures of the beautiful, old, closely packed houses and their squares and parks with pretty fountains and statues. There were tour boats everywhere!

Wow, if you like Danish pastry Copenhagen is the place to go! They had delicious Danish at breakfast, and there are many, many shops selling these delicious pastries. While wandering around Copenhagen we found a wonderful bakery, St. Peter’s Bakery, and noticed a sign inside the bakery stating that you are only allowed to purchase 10 items at a time so their baker has a chance to catch up. Anyway, we bought some Danish and while eating it on the bench outside we talked to two women who were enjoying theirs. They said they were there yesterday and came back. The next day we were tired and hungry and Bob mentioned that he could find that bakery again, and he did! The middle picture is a smørrebrød that I had for lunch. A smørrebrød is an open-faced sandwich, and the one that I chose had hard boiled eggs, shrimp and watercress on a slice of hard dark bread which was very good except for the bread. The third picture is the fish we had for dinner the first evening we were there. It was a dinner for two and so good! Yes, it looks terrible, but trust me, that fish was delish!

We really enjoyed our time in Copenhagen with its friendly people, delicious Danish, and beautiful canals and harbors but it was time to move on. We had tickets on the train to Stockholm in the morning so it’s goodbye Copenhagen. We were so glad to be able to visit!
