Acadia…we’re back!

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

We really enjoy spending time at Acadia National Park, which has both mountains and the sea. How can you go wrong there? We take our camper, find a nice site at Bar Harbor Campground, and just relax and enjoy our days.

We really like to ride our bicycles on the carriage roads in Acadia. Our first outing is always a 6.9 mile ride to Witch Hole Pond. It's not too hard or too long, but there is a nice hill to test our legs on and we were able to get up the hill without too much trouble. Happy day! We go the long way, to the right, it's a little longer and harder, but you've got to test those legs sooner or later!

Here's Bob just coming up the rise. Ha.

Our next ride was from Eagle Lake to Jordan Pond House. It's a popular ride, and now with e-bikes, it's even more popular.

I packed a lunch and we ate at the tables on the lawn at Jordan Pond House. I read that the restaurant closed their outdoor seating because of a yellowjacket infestation, but we ate our lunch at the tables and we weren't bothered at all. You can see Jordan Pond and South Bubble in the distance. We didn't hike any of the Bubble Trails this time because we've hiked them all on previous trips.

The weather hadn't been the greatest that week, so we decided to go on a road trip to Eastport where we know they have great fish and chips, and they sell the mustard that both Jaime and Beth really like.

The next day we drove the Park Loop Road to see the action at Thunder Hole, and it was the wildest that we've ever seen since we've been coming here! Of course there's action at Thunder Hole...a hurricane is coming!

Don't worry, our Zee is safe and sound. Bob went out to take some pictures, but I think I got better pictures watching him than he did outside! It was pretty windy and rainy, but Bob said if the big camper at the top of the hill facing broadside into the wind is still standing we'll be fine.

What do you do in a camper during a hurricane? You make chicken stew for lunch, satisfy your husband's sweet tooth by making cinnamon bun coffee cake, and then if it's still windy and raining you bake a loaf of bread. We were not going to starve! The power did go out in the evening, but we were set. We had a generator, a full tank of water, we both had good books, and we had a lot to eat.

It didn't take long for the weather to settle, so the next day we enjoyed the sunshine with a hike on the Gorham Mountain Trail, a nice trail with beautiful views of the ocean and Sand Beach.

Lobsters! Yum! Who can travel to Bar Harbor without trying out a few lobster pounds? We ate our fair share for sure!!

One of my favorite bicycle rides is along Bubble Pond to Wildwood Stables and there was a bonus waterfall this year because of the hurricane.

This time it was my turn to choose the hike and I chose Long Pond Trail, which is a very nice hike along Long Pond Trail connecting to Great Notch Trail and Gilley Trail.

We were going to ride our bicycles up Day Mountain the next day but I told Bob that I thought my brakes weren't as good as they should be for that ride. He checked the brakes and replaced them, but he also checked our tires. Look what he found! This was his tire, and he would have had a LONG walk from Day Mountain to our truck if that tire would have blown!

Bob did a great job on our bicycles and we made it up Day Mountain. We ride up the mountain every time we come to Acadia, and there is usually only a person or two who also ride up and maybe a hiker, but this year it was different. On the way up, as I was puffing away, a group of 40 somethings were riding down on e-bikes and they stopped to tell me that I'm almost there and it was worth the ride. It made me laugh because I knew that I wasn't even halfway up, but yes, it is worth the ride. While we were enjoying our lunch and the view six more e-bikers came up and took pictures with our bikes!!

Bob suggested hiking the Norumbega Mountain Trail, which connects to the Goat Trail and Hadlock Pond Trail. It started off on a nice path through the woods and along the pond with some bridges to make the hike easier. This led to the section that was mostly roots, and it made us realize that our ankles aren't as young as they used to be. I was concerned about the Goat Trail section, but Bob said it was only 6/10 of a mile so it would be ok. There aren't any pictures of the Goat Trail because I spent the entire trail either on my hands and knees trying to get up and over those rocks or sliding along on my butt trying not to look or fall down!!! It was not fun.

Our last bike ride was to Aunt Betty's Pond and the Seven Bridges but there are no pictues of the beautiful fall leaves because I left my phone on our truck's bumper. Bob said, "It's only a phone." But along with my phone, someone would have a bonus of my credit card, driver's license, a $20 bill, and my West Perry Senior Citizen Athletic Pass. Geesh. Everyone was honest that day and my phone is safely in my pocket now, where it belongs.

Our time in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park was almost over, but we had one more thing that we needed to do: cook lobsters on our stove in our new camper!

We really enjoyed this vacation at one of my favorite corners in the world, but we've been talking and planning our next trip and I can hardly wait for it to happen!
